This got me thinking, where did , “jiff/jiffy” come from? I don’t recall ever knowing the answer to that, of course I was knocked out twice in the Corps and I am almost certain I can’t remember things from my youth that other people in my family talk about and I have no recollection. Anyhooo, says here, get ready to learn Oppos:
The earliest technical usage for jiffy was defined by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (1875–1946). He proposed a unit of time called the “jiffy” which was equal to the time it takes !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to travel one centimeter in a vacuum (approximately 33.3564 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ).It has since been redefined for different measurements depending on the field of study.
In !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a jiffy is the period of an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! power cycle,1/60 or 1/50 of a second in most !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! supplies.
In !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a jiffy was originally the time between two ticks of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It is not an absolute time interval unit, since its duration depends on the clock interrupt frequency of the particular hardware platform.
So there you go.

Nonsense. It’s G as in Graphics. Even the creator of the file extension is wrong.

I know, I say it with a hard G sound. I just realized reading all the jiffy-ness in this here article that “giphy” is meant to pronounced like that stupid peanut butter brand’s name with a Y added to it.
As in quick.
To make a quick Gif.
Giphy.

There are so many sayings (though now I’m thinking about them I can’t think of any off the top of my head) and they almost always have a great origin.
One of my favourites is ‘mothers day’. It’s actually nothing to do with mothers but churches. It comes from Mother Day and Mothering Sunday where you’d go to your church, your mother church and take gifts.
